Something that we have noticed with our kids, is that they live on an emotional rollercoaster. They can go from being excited to anxious in the blink of an eye. They can be crying because they stubbed their toe and then 30 seconds later be doing cartwheels in the hallway. There are also times when our children’s emotions are not fleeting.
Whether they have a big test coming up, had a rough day at school, or just can’t seem to shake themselves out of the doldrums, we have found that aromatherapy can be a wonderful tool to ease their minds and get them back on the path to happiness. Diffusing oils is also a great way for kids to enjoy the benefits of the essential oils without having to worry about having skin reactions. Inhaled oils have also been shown to enhance feelings of relaxation, encouragement, excitement, focus, and well-being.
Listed below are eight simple recipes that when diffused can work wonders on your children’s (and hopefully your) emotional well-being.
Many of the blends mentioned have citrus oils (lemon, lime, wild orange, etc.) that have natural cleansing and refreshing properties. Most children love fruit (we know ours do) and the smell of wild orange or lemon can immediately take their mind off of the troubles they are having. If you’re in a pinch and not sure what range of emotions your child is feeling at the time, diffusing citrus oils is a great place to start.
Aside from citrus oils, many of the blends also contain either mint or woody fragrances. Mint scents have been used to aid in soothing stomachs and anxiety for many years. While wood blends can promote peaceful and calming emotions.
The DoTERRA blends (DoTERRA Forgive, Balance, Passion, etc.) are premixed blends containing multiple essential oils. These oils work together to help overcome certain feelings or ailments. For instance the DoTERRA Balance blend contains Spruce Needle/Leaf, Ho Wood, Frankincense Resin, Blue Tansy Flower, and Blue Chamomile Flower essential oils in a base of Fractionated Coconut Oil. Many of the oils used in the proprietary blends are not available as stand alone oils.
It is always good to let your children smell the oils before diffusing them as this can help in a couple of ways. First, it can distract them from the feelings that they have. Second, when a child helps to do something, they take pride in it. This can amplify the effect that the oils have on the child do to them having more of a connection to that specific blend.
